What is the future of learning? How should people and animals relate to each other? What unique challenges are faced by different communities, and how can they be addressed in order to produce society wide equity? How will new methods of urban planning and design influence our global cities?
In 2012, as a report concluded that Africa haemorrhaged 20,000 professionals annually and predicted that in 25 years Africa would be ‘empty of brains’, Eidos convened an international congress on ‘Productive Nations, Investing in People’ with the University of Pretoria, North West University, and the University of the Western Cape. The creation and maintenance of a productive nation in balance with the health and wellbeing of the workforce in both a South African and Australian context formed the basis of the ‘Building a Healthy Nation’ Working Group, with Australian and South African participating academic experts.
Companion animal research represents a non-traditional policy solution geared towards improving the wellbeing of society. In conjunction with The University of Sydney, Eidos is facilitating the development of this idea through targeted roundtable discussions engaging directly with industry and government.
In collaboration with Charles Darwin University, Eidos’ Thinking Allowed forum will hold ‘the Northern Futures Project’ that is scheduled to go ahead in February 2013. This project will explore a variety of issues pertaining to one of Eidos’ key policy areas, Tropical Research.
In 2013, Eidos will continue these conversations, by continuing to convene the South African congress on ‘Productive Nations, Investing in People’, and by supporting an Australian Research Council project concerning ‘Place-based Intervention Templates to Reduce Homelessness among Young People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and Indigenous Backgrounds’ in collaboration with James Cook University, Swinburne University of Technology, and Charles Darwin University.
Previous Eidos research in this area has investigated lifecourse transitions, including longitudinal studies, the impact of lifecourse transitions on an ageing population, and how such transitions can best be managed for all age groups.
