Mixed Methods: Applied Business and Policy Research

Policy leaders, industry and university researchers will be introduced to an emerging third methodological movement which offers a conceptual framework for innovative research design that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative research.
Workshop participants will be given an overview of mixed methods, its historical and philosophical roots, mixed methods terminology, mixed methods typologies & research designs, key issues and contentions and uses across a variety of fields of research (i.e. education, management, business, health and medical sciences, social and behavioural sciences and evaluation). Participants will be introduced to the Five P’s framework for consideration when deciding to conduct mixed methods research as developed by the Workshop presenter. A comprehensive bibliography of seminal mixed methods literature and glossary of terms will be supplied to workshop participants. Case studies will be discussed along with interactive workshop activities that allow participants to explore mixed methods research designs within contemporary research themes and contexts.

About the Presenter
Dr Roslyn Cameron
Ros Cameron is a Senior Lecturer at Central Queensland University (CQU). Her own VET based PhD research utilised a Sequential Mixed Model research design in investigating the learning and career transitions of those considered disadvantaged in the labour market.
Since then she has pursued her interest in mixed methods through presentations of her research into mixed methods at Doctoral Symposiums and international conferences.
She is currently conducting research into mixed methods use in business and management disciplines (HRD/HRM, career development, marketing), as well as VET research. She won an Internal Research Grant from SCU to investigate the use of mixed methods in DBA theses from 1997- 2007 and is currently involved in 3 large research projects that are utilizing mixed methods research designs. Ros has approximately 26 publications on mixed methods and is the Editor of a new online Journal that published its first issue late 2011: International Journal of Mixed Methods in Applied Business and Policy Research. She is also Co-Convenor of the Mixed Methods Special Interest Group (MMR SIG) for the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM)
